What Unimegle is

Unimegle is a website for talking to people you have never met, over video, one person at a time. There is no feed to scroll, no profile to fill in before you can use it, and no friends list to build. You press start and you are matched with someone; if the conversation is not for you, you skip and meet the next person.

It runs in the browser. There is nothing to download on a phone or on a laptop, and the same address works on both.

Where the name comes from

Omegle popularised the idea this product is built on: open a page, press a button, talk to a stranger. It closed in November 2023 after fourteen years, and the habit outlived it — people kept searching for somewhere to do the same thing. The name Unimegle is a nod to that lineage, and to the fact that the people you meet here come from all over the world.

How the matching works

A random video chat does not have to be genuinely random. When you tell Unimegle what you are interested in and what language you speak, those preferences feed into who you are put with, so a conversation has somewhere to start beyond "hello". You can ignore all of it and simply press start — that works too.

Every match is a private, two-person conversation. There are no group rooms and no audience watching, and either side can leave at any moment. The three steps are laid out on the homepage.

What it costs

Unimegle is not free from end to end, and it would be easier — but dishonest — to say it is. Here is how it actually works.

You can open the site and start matching without an account and without paying. Every new visitor gets a set number of free matches and a number of free call minutes, which exist so you can find out whether the service is any good before it costs you anything. The exact allowance varies, so we would rather not print a number here that turns out to be wrong for you — what you have is always shown in the app.

Once that allowance is used, video chats run on credits you top up, charged by the minute while a call is connected. There is also an optional membership that unlocks additional features. Neither is required to try the service, browsing costs nothing, and nothing is ever charged without you choosing it — but a long conversation with someone, every day, is a paid product.

How it is kept in order

Two things do most of the work. The first is the controls in your hands: skip, block and report are available in every conversation, and none of them require an explanation. The second is enforcement — reports are reviewed against the Community Guidelines, and accounts that break them lose access, permanently in serious cases.

No moderation system catches everything the instant it happens, and we would rather say so than imply otherwise. What we can promise is that reporting takes one tap and that reports are read. Who it is for

People who want to meet new people online for a conversation rather than a following: someone practising a language with a person who grew up speaking it, someone who moved cities and wants to hear a voice, someone curious about how the evening looks nine time zones away.

It suits you less if you are looking for an audience, or for something that stays free forever — a stranger video chat with real people on the other side has a running cost, and this one is funded by the people using it rather than by advertising. Age and eligibility requirements are set out in the Terms of Service, and they apply to everyone.
